As
in all Episcopal Churches, the vestry is the elected lay governing
board of the parish. Traditionally, and by canon law, the vestry
is the legal representative of the parish “in all matters
concerning its corporate property and the relations of the Parish
to its Clergy” except as may be provided by the state law
or the diocesan canons (Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal
Church I.14.2). The rector is the Presiding Officer and the rest
of the vestry is comprised of two wardens, a treasurer, a clerk
and nine general members. The officers are elected for terms of
one year, and the general members are elected for terms of three
years. These elections occur at Annual Meeting in January of each
year.
(Read an essay on what it means to serve on the vestry.)
The basic responsibilities
of the vestry are to:
help define and articulate the mission of the congregation
support the mission by word and deed
ensure effective organization and planning
ensure adequate resources in leadership and in financial stewardship
manage resources effectively
determine that appropriate programs, policies, and procedures
have been developed and are followed
assess it own performance
The vestry meets monthly (usually on the 2nd Monday of the month).
The meetings are open for any member of the parish to visit. The vestry
is comprised of people representing the breadth of our parish and
their various perspectives help make effective decisions on the whole
parish's behalf.
