Christian Education, sometimes referred to as 'Formation,' is an integral part of our individual journeys as people of faith. Of course, learning happens all the time in informal settings, and this is true at St. Barnabas as well. But we also provide Christian education through book groups, retreats, and a Sunday morning Education Hour for all ages.

Our newly repainted lower parish hall classrooms are providing space for age groups birth to two, three to five, six to eight, and nine to eleven, and a meeting room for the sixth- and seventh- graders. The upper hall and small conference room are places for everyone in eighth grade to adult to gather.

We use “Seasons of the Spirit,” an internationally used resource, based on the Sunday lectionary. The goal of the curriculum, according to its authors, is “to provide God's people with lectionary-based, ecumenical resources that empower all ages to be transformed in Christ.”

With each age group, and during occasional intergenerational activities, we explore the meaning of the Bible through the stories of the lectionary and fine arts illustrations, and participating in ministries of love, justice and service that grow out of the Biblical message. Because each age experiences the same lectionary in different ways, we have the opportunity to grow and share as a community.

We at Saint Barnabas are ordinary people often making extraordinary choices. Everything we do in our lives has an impact on the world, from what vegetables we buy to what outreach projects we create. Through sharing the Biblical stories and our own stories this fall, we can explore what it means to be a community of Christians who, as we promise in our baptismal vows, “strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being” (Book of Common Prayer, p.305).
